New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
